This is the day you have been waiting for. The honeymoon. What? Did you think I would say your wedding day? Well, having probably spent all of your waking moments stressing, planning and going over every.single.detail down to the color of the of ink you will use to write thank you cards with, you and your new husband deserve a much needed vacation.
It is time to pack. Let us learn our lesson from a dear friend of mine. After a year of planning her wedding, she was ready for the big day. It was the night before she would walk down the aisle and say her “I Do’s”, when we were sitting at her house enjoying a small minute of rest from the busy day that had followed up to then and I asked her, “have you packed for your honeymoon?” Her face suddenly turned white and panic struck. Her flight was early the morning after the wedding and this was the 11th hour. The good news was we were able to get her packed with a huge group effort, but I am pretty sure she may have had an un-matching pair of flip flops packed along with all that chaos.
The point is, packing for the honeymoon is part of the wedding planning. So in order to make this as minimally stressful on you and the groom to be, let us go over a few do’s and don’ts for packing for the big day…your honeymoon.
DO Your Research
It is important that you take some time before you pack to look at the details of your destination and resort. Find out specifics such as:
Predicted Weather Forecast
Surrounding and Included Restaurants
By looking at some of the features and learning about your destination you will be able to have a really good idea what you will need to pack. For example, some resort restaurants will have strict dress codes and you do not want to be stuck eating at the restaurant bar every night because your husband forgot to pack dress pants and dress shoes. Oh, and some of these same restaurants will require reservations, so it is best to get that out of the way when you arrive.
Don’t Over Pack Your Clothes
It is good to have choices as what you will wear while you are on your honeymoon. Cute dress A or Cute dress B? Try narrowing down your options before you leave! This goes for coordinating your shoes and other accessories. Pack items that pair well with others. You’ll never go wrong with a classic black dress.
Here are a few suggestions:
5-6 Tops- you can Mix and Match
3 Bottoms-Jeans and thinner material pants for those tropical climates
3 Pairs of Shorts
1-2 Warm covers like a jacket or blazer, depending on the evening climates.
3-4 Dresses – One super sexy for a special evening and a few sundresses
2 Skirts- you can mix and match with your tops
4 Pairs of shoes- Pack neutral colors so that can be easily paired: Heels, sandals, sneakers for excursions and flip-flops for the beach
Enough Lingerie/Undergarments for each night you will be there- It is your honeymoon so bring sexy back, and pack the lace, nighties and your best make-him-say-wow underwear! Of course depending on the occasion, under-garments are optional.
DO Invest in Your Swimwear
Let’s face it, you have earned it. This is your time to relax and enjoy spending time with your new husband. You will devote a fair amount of time, laying by the pool or toes dug in the sand on the beach. Picking out the best suits is key. Since you will be spending so much time in your swimwear while on vacation, really these are probably the second most important items to pack aside from your tooth brush. That is why it is important to invest in high-quality swimwear, it’s your honeymoon and you deserve to treat yourself. Besides, do you really want to wear that Kmart 2 piece that you know will fall off your body as soon as a wave crashes on you?
1 classic suit that you must wear, knowing you will turn every head on the beach as you walk by. Sure, you’re married now, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop impressing him with an impromptu beach catwalk.
A one piece- This may be a good idea for an excursion or a day you want to just decide to lay under a cabana and just read. Either way you can’t go wrong!
Don’t Forget Cover-ups and Skincare!
The sun can be brutal, especially if you are not used to the salt life and beach destinations. That is why you should be sure to bring a few cover ups for when the sun becomes too intense and a high-quality sunscreen. Most dermatologists will recommend one with at least a SPF of 30. You also do not want to forget aloe. If you ever have, and subsequently had a sunburn you will quickly regret that you neglected to pack that.
SO before you say your nuptials keep in mind to plan ahead when you are packing for your honeymoon. Obviously, we did not include everything that should be included when you are packing for your getaway but simply just a few Do’s and Don’ts we recommend when you are preparing for your romance-filled first week as newlyweds!
